General Advice and FAQs
Q. What does EDP and EDT mean ?
Perfume, Aftershave, Eau de Parfum (EDP) and Eau de Toilette (EDT) mean
slightly different things for mens and womens fragrances.
In short, for women the strongest fragrance available is Perfume, followed by
Eau de Perfume and then Eau de Toilette. As such Perfume and EDP tends to be
more expensive and longer lasting, however with EDT being slightly lighter it
is better suited to everyday use.
For men, the strongest fragrance is usually Eau de Toilette (EDT) with
Aftershave having a slightly less concentration of fragrance but being kinder
to the skin.
The diagram below clearly shows the different types of fragrances and their
concentration of perfume oil, which in turn dictates the length of time the
fragrance will remain on the skin before complete evaporation:
Q. Do women have a better sense of smell than men ?
Surprisingly yes, they do, but this is more due to women training or using the
sense of smell more than men. Typically, women buy more fragrances and beauty
products than men and as such acquire a more acute use of the sense. Scientists
are studying the effects of hormonal fluctuations and how they impact on womens
sense of smell.
Q. Where should fragrance be applied ?
The best places to apply fragrance are the pulse points, these are behind the
ears, the wrists and also behind the knees!
Although most men normally apply aftershave to the face, eau de toilette is
slightly stronger than aftershave and should be applied to the chest and neck,
rather than directly onto the face.
